I'll tell you answers based from the video game. That movie was based on the video game series Silent Hill (the game has seven installments so far and the 8th coming next year) produced by Konami. I played five of the series recently starting February when I admired the 5th game. Way back history, SIlent Hill was inhabited by ancient people who worships with the old gods. These gods aren't like Jesus or Allah, for they do not know good and evil, only chaos and order. What they want is only order, but to put chaotic societies into order, it means great power. Well, the order was brought by one of the old gods of SH: The Goddess. She brought everything normal and prosperous but after doing that, she died.Well, when disorder starts to go again, these people (and present people of SH) wishes order to be back again, but their Goddess is no longer living.Thereafter,they go into secret worshipping events and they established The Order, a cult who worships Goddess.In the games, the leader of this cult was Dahlia and in the movie it is Christabella. So I'll go to movie perspective:to bring back Goddess to life she needs to be born again.Dahlia (in the movie she's the insane woman, but in the games she isn't insane and she's a high priestess) offered her daughter Alessa as the mother of the Goddess.Why Alessa?She has great psychic power and her classmates bully her calling her witch.The other half of Alessa,the good one, was Cheryl (in the games) or Sharon (in the movie).Cheryl's origin is unknown and she's been adopted by Rose (in the movie) or Harry (in the games), Now,during the ritual of taking over of Alessa's body as the mother of the Goddess,Dahlia accidentally burned her house. Of course Alessa burnt too.All of the houses on the street of Dahlia also burned.Alessa got a three degree burn and she died.That's why on the movie, when Rose's husband read about Silent Hill, it says the town is burned. Here's the trick: Silent Hill is enveloped in 2 worlds: the real world and the Otherworld.As the name implies, real world is the real world.In real world, Silent Hill appears to be a ghost town and it looks like the whole town has been burned in the 19th century.On Otherworld (where paints are peeled and there are lots of metals in the building), it is an alternate world where inhabitants of SH are still living but are seized by the Order.The metals and burning inside buildings shows ALessa's fate when she died of burning.There is constant ashfall there and the town was enshrouded in fog and monsters creeping. Why is there an Otherworld? This is an imagination of Alessa. Remember ALessa's role as the mother of Goddess?They asked her what should the people do to regain order, Alessa replied that all non-believers of the Goddess should die.I guess apart from burning Dahlia's house, the order began to seize these people and they killed some of them.All of the believers sought consolation from the church, the Balkan Church. Now why does the town in eternal fog and monsters all around?Maybe that's what the order afraids in to.When Alessa died the town began to change like that, seems it is isolated from the rest of the world.Don't know how but maybe it was done by the outside forces. The role of the Pyramid Head (the monster with a pyramidal metal on his head and carrying large knife) isn't clear to me but many sites says he is the holder of justice and judgment which is sometimes isn't just. |
